Reflecting on a range of key moments in
historical locations and periods, the essays compiled in this volume were
delivered as lectures in memory of Professor Sarbani Chaudhury between 2018 and
2023. The essays by Professor Supriya Chaudhuri, Professor Amlan Dasgupta and
Professor Swapan Chakravorty focus on Shakespeare and Milton by re-examining
their works through later influential theorists and producing compellingly
nuanced accounts of their continuing presence across literary time-spaces.
Through extensive archival and historical research,. Professor Anustup Basu's
essay highlighting the figures of Raminohun and Bankimchandra, analyses the
formation of a national consciousness, one continually shaped by colonial
ideologies. Dr Swati Moitra's essay employs a close investigative reading of a
canonical poem by Indian English poet Toru Dutt, bringing to bear upon it new
scholarships of materialities and plant humanities.
